Has this ever happened to you?
It’s pretty frustrating isn’t it. Especially when you’ve spent time installing all the latest software and now it doesn’t seem to want to work.
Bear with me, because I’m going to show you how to fix it…
I was installing the PDW-U1 on a PC the other day and it kept crashing, so just before I was ready to throw the deck out of the window, I decided to go through and re-read the ‘read me ‘ file
I must confess I’d only glanced over the instructions and missed the following section:
-Before reinstalling the XDCAM Drive Software, always uninstall the software (do not perform a repair) and restart your computer.
-The XDCAM Drive Software may not perform properly if installed with some antivirus packages, some anti-spyware tools, and some UDF 2.5 file system drivers.
-The XDCAM Drive Software may not perform properly if a drive letter beyond ‘Z’ has been assigned to the PDW-U1.
And here’s something else to keep in mind:
Software Installation
If an old version of the XDCAM Drive Software is already installed, it must be uninstalled before you install the new version. Use “Add or Remove Programs” on the Control Panel to remove the old version of the Sony XDCAM Drive Software. After doing so, be sure to restart the computer.
Now, here’s the next step:
• Restart your machine
• Disconnect from the internet (very important)
• Disable your antivirus/firewall/anti spyware (hence disconnecting from internet)
• Plug in PDW-U1
• Insert disc
Disc will now load without putting your PC into a state of ‘blue’ shock.
One Final piece of advice:
RTFM- or (Read the manual), filebase technology does require specific steps in a certain order otherwise things can go belly up.

Virus protection scans drive when you insert your XDCAM disc.
This causes the PC to lock up or crash.
We use Sophos and we configured it not to scan any removable drive assigned to the letter X. Set this up and then before you load your disc, ensure you have assigned your XDCAM drive to the letter X.
Imports should then work.
