Beware of hard drives formatted as FAT-32!
Here’s an interesting one that frankly stumped me this week
It’s to do with writing files greater than 4GB on to hard drives formatted in FAT-32 rather than NFTS
I thought I’d share this with you in case you find yourself in the same situation.
If you buy a hard check what file system the drive is factory preset to. When prompted then select NFTS and NOT FAT32 when choosing to format the drive
Why?
It turns out that the FAT 32 file system is quite old and the limitations on any one clump of data is only 4GB. Once it gets to 4GB it basically falls over - Not Great!
What’s the solution?
To get around this simply format your drive as NFTS when prompted and the problem will disappear.
The issue may be with some Lacie Drives coming from the factory pre formatted as FAT-32 so a quick reformat will solve the issue
I’m not sure why manufacturers still use FAT-32 but at least you now know how to avoid this
