With less people there it felt like there was much more time available on the stand’s and more importantly far more opportunities to meet up with lots of old faces and some new too. This made a lovely change from the usual mayhem of past NAB’s.
So to make up for my lack of posting last week I promise to post every day this week to bring you up to speed on what I learned at the show.
So what caught my eye?
Convergent Design - The Nano Flash
I met with Mike Schell at the Convergent stand in the South Hall and he demonstrated a working Nano Flash. It is 80% smaller than the flash XDR and draws only 7 Watts of power. With 2 CF slots and HD-SDI input and output as well as HDMI I/O so you could even use it with a D-SLR such as the Canon 5DmkII - Impressive! The only real difference between the Nano Flash and the Flash XDR is that the Nano does not have analogue audio input so if you want to record audio you must use the embedded audio stream in the HD-SDI.
But the Nano can be triggered by TC or the remote switch as on the XDR.
So with delivery anticipated for June what will this mean for the Sony EX1/EX3?
Well in the UK the BBC HD channel and Sky HD, Channel 4 HD, ITV HD and anyone else who follows their guidelines will finally have a sensible and practical solution for recording at higher bit rates than 50mb/s on a unit that is no larger than a DVCAM tape box. Well done Mike and the Team at Convergent, I know there’s been a great deal of hard work and resources gone in to getting the unit ready.
I will post a video that we filmed with Mike in a few days.
Tomorrow I’ll show you the various solid state developments…..including brand new P2 cards 1/3 of the price and 10 x real time ingest! Also some neat location backup devices for solid state memory.
Until then, please do leave a comment.

Hi Den,
Thanks for all the reports. If you managed to catch up with the AJA guys at NAB I would be interested to get your take on the KiPro. It seems like there is a certain amount of overlap in functions with the Nano Flash and we are reaching another choose your workflow crossroads. Also I have been trying to find UK prices for the KiPro and Nano flash, do you have any idea what they will be?
Thanks
Brian
Hi Brian
I didn’t get a chance to see the KiPro but the specs look interesting. I’ll speak to AJA and see when I can get my hands on one. Full 10 bit 422 is a big plus with a choice of recording on Hard Drives SDD or Express cards makes it versatile. It’s a lot larger than the Nano Flash. UK pricing will be £3250 for base unit but by the time you’ve added storage and brackets I ‘m guessing nearer the £3500-£4000 mark list price. The Nano Flash has no confirmed pricing as yet but Convergent are saying they expect the price to be around $4000.
